India won the toss and chose to bat.
One change each – India have brought in Umesh Yadav for Hanuma Vihari, and South Africa have brought in Anrich Nortje for Dane Piedt. Both teams bringing in an extra quick, which points at how they’ve read the pitch.
Pranav: “I still can’t fathom why SA haven’t chosen Ngidi. He’s played on this ground before (albeit in T20 cricket) and has good skillsets. Why debut Anrich Nortje who’s unproven in these conditions?” – Nortje does offer a bit of an x-factor through. Can really crank it up.
India: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 7 R Ashwin, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Mohammed Shami
South Africa: 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Dean Elgar, 3 Theunis de Bruyn, 4 Temba Bavuma, 5 Faf du Plessis (capt), 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Senuran Muthusamy, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Anrich Nortje
Dwight Schrute: “Poor Faf, 9 toss losses in a row! I’m a supporter of the new initiative where there’s no toss and the visiting team chooses whether to bat/bowl due to the huge chasm between the home and away teams in recent years. I think it’s been trialed in English county season?” – he had another wry smile after this toss, have to feel for him actually, he needs to win the toss in the third Test surely!
Virat Kohli: We’re going to bat first, it looks like a hard surface. Eventually the ball will turn here form day two and three, so the first one and a half days will be the best to bat on. Vihari unfortunately misses out on this game and Umesh Yadav replaces him. We don’t need to feel like we need to strengthen the spin attack a bit more apart from Ash and Jadeja. There’s a bit of grass cover and the ball might reverse later, which is why we’ve included Umesh. We literally bat till No.8 with Ashwin and Jadeja there, so the extra batsman might not be needed.
Faf du Plessis: Was more disappointed in losing the toss for the previous game. I was saying to Virat before the toss he must teach me the magic trick he uses to win the toss in India! If you bowl really well in the first innings, you can take days four and five out of the equation. Just the one change, we’re bringing Nortje for Piedt. It was very positive in the last Test, the way we batted in the first innings. We didn’t get 20 wickets, that’s why we’ve brought in someone who can hopefully help us do that. I think he’ll be happy at making his debut on this pitch.
Meanwhile, this is going to be a significant landmark for Virat Kohli. It’s his 50th Test as captain. Only MS Dhoni has captained India more. Kohli leaves behind Sourav Ganguly, who captained in 49 Tests.
